“The care of dementia is actually the care of two people: the person with the illness and the person taking care of him,” says Johns Hopkins expert Deirdre Johnston.

The Need Is Great
- In the State of Alabama, 1 in 4 adults is a caregiver (approximately 750,000)
- Of that number, 28% are caregivers for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementia.
- Caregiving can be:
- LENGTHY – Over half have provided care for at least 2 years
- INTENSE – Almost 1/3 have provided care for at least 20 hours per week. Many provide around the clock care.
- MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY DRAINING – Nearly 80% manage all household tasks. Nearly 60% assist with personal care.
